How to Develop and Maintain a Relationship with God

Hi Believers 👋🏽

If you have been wanting to create a relationship with God, but don’t know where to start you are in the right place. Or, if you already have a relationship with God, but have been distant from Him lately and is trying to find your way back to Him, you are also in the right place!

Why should you have a relationship with God?

God is the creator of Heaven and Earth. He created us humans, animals, plants, and everything in this world. Therefore it’s only right to have a relationship with our Father who created us. Just like how we have a relationship with our mom and dad, the ones who birthed us. Our mom and dad’s responsibility is to nurture, care, protect, provide, and guide their children. And that’s the same thing our Heavenly Father wants to do with you, me, and the rest of His children. Now the question is how do we create a relationship with someone who we may not know anything about or ever seen? From personal experiences, the same way you create a relationship with God is very similar to how you maintain a relationship with God. The key is making it a habit to spend quality time with God everyday.

Again, it’s just like your parents. Even though your mom and dad are your parents, they may not know your interests, your feelings on certain things, or your passions as a teenager or adult and you may know any of their interests and what they are passionate about either. So the way to get to know one another is to spend quality time with each other.

It’s the same way with God. In order to get to know Him, you have to spend time with Him. The more effort you put in on spending quality time with God each day, the more you get to know who God is, how He works, how He wants you to live, the reason He put you on this Earth (your purpose), and so much more!

Quiet Time with God
As mentioned, the key to developing a relationship with God, finding your way back to God, and overall maintaining a relationship with Him is spending time with Him everyday. The way you spend time with God is by completing various spiritual practices. Some examples of those spiritual practices are:

  • Practicing Gratitude
  • Praise/Worship
  • Prayer
  • Asking for Forgiveness
  • Reading the Bible
  • Reading a Devotional
  • Watching a Sermon

Steps you can take today to Create a Relationship with God/Find Your Way Back to God:

1. Figure out a place where you are going to have your quiet time with God. This place can be in your bedroom, living room, etc. Any place where you are alone and where it is quiet.

2. Figure out when you are going to have quiet time with God. Is it going to be early mornings at 6:30 am or in the evenings at 5:30pm? Try to keep this time the same everyday. Set up an alarm if needed. If you set an alarm, don’t snooze! (My personal tip is to have your quiet time early in the morning before anyone in your household wakes up therefore you can talk to God out loud without any interruptions.)

3. During your time with God you should start off with an honest prayer letting God know you are seeking a relationship with Him and that right now it may not be genuine and authentic, but you pray that with His guidance will get you there. If you have been neglecting God, ask Him for His forgiveness and then do an honest prayer. Tell God why have you been so distant and ask Him may He help you find your way back to Him.

4. After prayer, write out 3 things you are grateful for and why.

5. I would stop at #4, but if you are still spiritually hungry after prayer and gratitude then I would suggest choosing 1 or 2 more spiritual practices from above to add to your time with God.
